The Daily Beer and Bike Log Jan 6 2015 : Cold Weather Gear

In waiting like a kid for the weather to change and I can ride my bike again. These temps suck!!!

I figured I would put together a list of some gear you could use (and it ain't fucking cheap) so that you can brave the elements to go for a ride. Now keep in mind the state of uyour local mountain bike trails is also a factor, if they are fucked up maybe just a bike path or road ride with suffice to scratch the itch.

Anyway I have some of this stuff, and can't really afford the other stuff, since my hobbies range from the biking to other expensive activities, that exhaust my extra income. But if it is all biking for you well your disposible income can be spent on this list.

If you bike you probably already have a pair or two of padded shorts

I know I like to cushion my ass on both short and long rides.  Now you want a good base layer so a set of something like Uder Armour (although there are other less expensive brands out there) But the important thing is some type of Polypropylene layers to wick away sweat and keep you warm. If you are wet and it is cold, then you are cold and that sucks. Here is one from Amazon Gore Bike Wear Men's Base Layer Windstopper Long Shirt

A set of windproof cycling pants or tights will help keep your legs warm.

If you are like me once I get moving My legs are usually alright with a longer pair of shorts over my bike shorts. But when the temp uis below freezing (if my ass is out there) These would help.
On top perhaps a A Softshell type jacket these are not cheap but here is your average jacket it is not totally windproof because it has to breath but usually it is somewhat insulated .
You can also go with a rain proof type commuter jacket

if you are nuts and want to go out in both the freezing cold and the rain.

Now we need to protect those fingers and toes. First your hands. If you don't want your fingers falling off in the fridgid temps, you can go all out with a pair of lobster gloves....

Or if you don't need that much warmth,  you can just get them fingers covered with a pair of windproof but breathable gloves.

Now for those piggies, I hate when my feet are cold, no matter what I am doing outside. A good pair of  moisture wicking wool socks will do the trick. There are a ton of pairs out there, but the more wool in the blend the better off you will be.

You want to keep your head warm under that helmet so here are two options. The first is a windproof skullcap...

If you want your neck and face covered also you can always go with a Balacava (you look like a ninja also and who doesn't want to be a Ninja?)

And finally if you don't wear glasses like I do anyway a pair of clear (or shaded if you prefer) Glasses will block the wind and other things from your eyes.

I am by no means an expert so if you are unsure about anything go by your local bike shop they can help you out with all of this and more. This is just my way of staying warm and again I don't even own some of the pricey stuff above, just the basics (base layers then I throw clothes over the top, sweatshirts and layers or just say fuck it and wait till it is warm enough to ride)

Anyone UP For a Ride?

Beer School 101 From The Net: How To Brew Your Own Beer with Bonnie (for less than $2 a 6-Pack!)

Hey everyone could use some advice on the cheapest way to make a Six pack I found this video on the Youtube channel Authorized 77...It is an interesting view...

The Daily Beer and Bike Logs Jan 5....Where the Trail Ends A great find on Netflix

The other day it was too cold and rainy to do anything but have a few beers and watch some TV. So I found Where the trail ends on Netflix.

I enjoy documentaries and even more so about subjects close to my heart. Although I am new to the Mountain bike world I have fallen in love with it. So When I started to watch this I was enthralled. The scenery is amazing the riding even better.

The opening sequence is sort of a music video with these amazing downhill guys hitting the trails (or lack of in some cases) in Utah. Speeding, jumping and flipping down these hills, and doing shit I only wish I had the balls to do. They decide to travel the world and find some places where the tread of Mountain bikes tires have yet to touch. In a goal very similair to the film Endless summer where the surfers search the globe for the perfect wave to tackle Darren Berrecloth, James Doerfling, Andreu Lacondeguy, Kurt Sorge and Cam Zink Try to find lines that have not even been created yet around the world in places like Argentina, China, and Tibet. The scenery is awesome the riding they do is even better.

If you are just starting out like me or an advanced rider this film is a great watch....Here is just a glimpse...

Where the Trail Ends is a film following the worlds top freeride mountain bikers as they search for untraveled terrain around the globe, ultimately shaping the future of big mountain free riding. This unparalleled story documents man's challenge of mother nature and himself showcased through a cast of colorful characters. This is the most progressive and ambitious mountain biking ever attempted resulting in an entertainment adventure unlike anything experienced before. From the IMDB page

I Could not find who to credit with the pictures (both above and below) only refer you to the Official Site But just these stills give you a taste of the areas these dudes rode...

Nothing new on the beer front went with an old standby had a bottle of Sam Adams Winter Lager. But did have a long chat with my buddy Rob who does brew his own beer, about a few things I may need (also cost effecttive items, like instead of a huge brew pot, maybe turning that old Keg I never returned into a brew pot. Anyway more to come on the brewing as we get closer to my first class on making my own beer.

The Daily Beer and Bike Logs: Jan 3 - Red Bull Rampage 2014 and a new Stout

Although I woke to pouring rain, which fucked any chance I may have had to squeeze a short ride in this morning. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Red Bull Rampage competition On Television. The downhill insanity was just terrific. Watching the riders dropping in and making lines that were not even there, and if the lines were there, they would create magic down the cliffs and jump over canyons (yes Canyons) there were stories in between rides about the injuries these guys suffer as well as great GoPro shots of the rides.

Now the downside to this excitement was I wanted more than ever to get back on the bike. Was I going to go out and drop 50 feet off of anything I could find here in Missouri? No! But I wanted to get on the bike again and leave the real world if only for a short period of time. Well since the weather was not cooperating I had to settle for jumping on the exercise bike to start building toward that lag strength and stamina I will need once I get back out there.

On the fun front I did try another new beer from Stone Brewing (yes I am running the gamut lately from the Stone Collection)  Xocoveza Mocha Stout

From the description on their website it is a Chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper and coffee infused milk stout, and was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate. Now I can say not my favorite beer lately. Initially I enjoyed the first sip It was as if each flavor above hit your mouth finished off by the Chocolaty taste at the very end. I finished my glass and as I drank more the Chile peppers came to the forefront. As a Stout I gave it a 4 out of 10 against my go to (Sam Adams Octoberfest) not even a contest 2 out of 10 it was alright just not my cup of Stout. Hey Stone has had a nice run, this is the first I will say I would have to pass on if offered again.

Bike School 101 From The Net: How to Jump a Log on a Mountain Bike

This one is self explainatory...It pretty much amounts to doing a bunny hop but the log gives you a visual point of refrance at to when to Hop and how far to do it... Found on the Performance Bicycle page

The Daily Beer and Bike Logs. Jan 2, 2015

Had to get up for work for the first time in two weeks. Fuck that hurt. But in doing so as I came back and had my normal morning business meeting (that would be me a magazine and a Toilet yeah it sounds gross but grow up we all poop) I grabbed an issue of Bike magazine and started flipping through the pages. Oh the itch is back. Going to try and pull the Bike out this weekend, tune it up a bit, if it isn’t 20 degrees may even take a short ride.

The day was long and getting back into a routine usually sucks for a few days, so figured once I got home why not pop a Stone CoffeeMilk Stout

Yes again my Sam Glass (really should have used a Pub glass with this beer but fuck it)

The beer is a dream, so smooth, it has a definite Coffee taste with a malty flavor to go along with it. A great beer to sit down and sip, not too heavy (not heavy at all, People dark does not always mean heavy) Great Beer to end a day with.
For the friends that knew me back in the “I am going to just drink to get blitzed days” Yes I was what I now make fun off A Bud light drinking dickbag. And it is not to say if you drink Bud light (Miller lite, Coors light any beer from the big 3 that you are a Dickbag, just someone who has not opened their eyes to the vast beer possibilities that are out there…In my case I was a Dickbag, but ask any of my friends it was good times)
Anyway for some of them to see the variety of brews I drink now it may be a bit funny. I am not going to lie I was and still am a light weight when it comes to drinking. But the difference is now I enjoy the beers taste I savor it, and it also slows me down so I am not pounding beer after beer (again nothing wrong with it, but I had my day in the sun with that shit, Life is too short savor it…The beer also)

The Daily Beer and Bike Logs!!! Jan 1, 2015

I am going to make an effort to write a post every day (At least the weekdays) Will it always be about bike rides and or Beer I will try to weave it in no matter what but as this was supposed to be it will be about my life as a person who is stepping into bike riding and Beer making (as well as drinking, YUM!)

First let’s catch up with New Year’s Day I had the privilege to try a couple of great beers the first although it is in my Sam Adams Glass

was Lucky Bastard

Which is a mix of Arrogant Bastard Ale , Double Bastard Ale, and Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. On a pure beer level I will give this taste a 9 out of 10, Yes Great stuff.  Against my Go To Beer (Sam Adams Octoberfest) I still give it a 8 out of 10…Great beer I highly recommend this to anyone willing to try a stronger brew (8.5%) with a ton of taste…Take a chance and you may be a lucky Bastard….

Also during this grand Christmas Season I got a gift card to go take a class in brewing my own beer. Although I have been waiting for the time to go and visit my friends at Friendship Brewing (who still have an open invitation for my busy as to come brew with them)

I may very well pop my Brewing cherry with this class first to get the basics down before going with the professionals. I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty and my mouth full of my own beer.

I have also finally gotten off my lazy ass and started some aerobic workouts running and stationary bike, to get prepared for the spring and get my Mountain Biking ass back out there. Since running in my first ever half marathon I had gotten a bit lazy and busy. We moved, the holidays came along, as well as other family business happening that slowed down my workouts. But with the belly expanding and a little time back I am looking forward to beating the flab with some Mountain Biking this coming year.

So with January 1 in the books and a 20 minute stationary bike ride, to get the legs ready…Here I come 2015.
